YES! A bit of online promotion can go a long way. Bigger events need more attention, of course, but even a small event can benefit from a small campaign to get the word out.
Within our non-profit world of events and activities, your primary goal should be communication.
Effective event communication seeks to:
Get enough people in the door for the event to break even
Encourage populace involvement and excitement
Help the attendees prepare… for a happy & successful experience
Help recruit & retain future SCAdians
This class focuses on the best practices for a big event -- pulling out all the stops. If your event is smaller, take from it what you need.
It is intended for event stewards, calendar/event deputies, the social media officers and webministers who support event stewards, and anyone else who is willing to help build a bridge between event planning teams and the populace. The "frequently asked questions" for common SCA activities can also help new (or less-experienced) event teams identify gaps in their plans.
This class has been through a slow process of evolution. Social media continually changes. And you never know what the next event might teach you!
The most recent version was taught at the University of Atlantia online session on June 14, 2026; below you can find the slide deck and handout. I will link to the recording once it becomes available.
The handout for the June, 2026, version of the class is available as a PDF.
Not all branches of the SCA have a strong tech-support team. New social media officers will face a distinct lack of positive guidance from the Society. Most Kingdoms do not offer a "101" class or training program. Some branches have no Social Media Officer/Deputy at all, leaving the Seneschal (most often) to pick up these tasks.
In case your group needs a little boost, I am working on a playlist, showing (click-by-click) how to perform the common tasks of the office. This is a work in progress; I will continue to add to this list.
